Abstract

The article analyzes the double dimension of the internationalization of universities. A dimensión deals with internal aspects, mainly the institutional culture and university functions. The other dimensión deals with the international visibility and participation in the global higher education context. Both dimensions are related but have diferent strategies, expressions and impacts. The international cooperation is analyzed as a powerfull instrument for internationalization and the role and characteristics of cooperation netwoks are described. The article included a proposal of indicators to measure the degree and nature of the internationalization. Several families of indicators are proposed to self-evaluation of universities and a short list of indicators is proposed for comparative studies on internationalization of universities.
